All to the Opera!

As part of the 12th edition of European Open Days, Opera Garnier will open its doors to the public on May 5th and 6th. Enjoy a behind the scenes look at this magnificent building as the secrets of make-up, costume, and scenery are revealed step by step. And, it's close to the Chess Hotel Paris!
A day at the opera
Doors open at 10 o'clock in the morning at Opéra Garnier. You will enter through a majestic facade that, like the rest of the building, is the work of esteemed 19th century architect Charles Garnier. Discover the Rotonde du Glacier tapestries representing the tea, coffee, and champagne that are now offered as refreshments here. Spend time in a workshop; "try on a costume and leave with a souvenir photo" in the Great Hall where you'll be invited to join a ballet class. Stop for a snack and then at 3.30 p.m. take your children to the Public Bar of the School of Dance for their first introduction to dancers and ballet. You'll also be shown the backstage areas, stage machinery, the orchestra pit and, of course, the famous chandelier.
A very special day
Whether you are a fan of dance, music, or opera, you'll be captivated by this magical place. From the moment you enter the monument commissioned by Napoleon III, you will adore its baroque atmosphere, its gilding and chandeliers, and its ceilings painted with the fauns and angels that were characteristic of the time. Imagine yourself in top hat and tails complete with monocle as you climb the grand ceremonial staircase. Then, picture yourself taking your seat in your box, opera glasses to hand, ready to discover the ballets of Léo Delibes, be dazzled by Stravinsky's Firebird or enchanted by Ravel's timeless Bolero. And if you feel a little nostalgic as you arrive back at the Chess, the wonderful photographs taken by Pierre-Elie de Pibrac at the Opera Garnier and now part of our décor, will reignite your dreams.
