Iconic Places You Should Not Miss In Paris
Since a settlement was established on the Seine by the Celtic Parisian people, Paris has enjoyed a rich and varied history. Once the largest city in the western world, it has been renowned as a centre of learning and culture, a position that still holds true today. In keeping with this it is perhaps only natural that Paris is the home to the world’s most popular museum, the Louvre, where the nation’s greatest artistic treasures are housed.
Paris is also known as a centre for the arts. The Paris Opera was founded in the 17 century by Louis XIV, and the company grew to incorporate classical ballet. Both ballet and some classical operas are performed in the magnificent mid-19th century Opera Garnier. This exquisite Beaux Arts building is worth visiting for its superb architecture alone, but to fully appreciate it you should attend a performance, such as the Lander/Forsythe dance presentation beginning from September 20th.
Finally, Paris is one of the world’s major shopping destinations, boasting department stores that offer a retail experience like no other. You have not really shopped until you have seen what the likes of Galeries Lafayette and Printemps have to offer!
Opéra Garnier; An Emblematic Parisian Location
Created by the architect Charles Garnier and opened in 1875, the Opéra Garnier is one of the great buildings of Paris. This fine example of Second French Empire neo-Baroque style is still a place to take the breath away, such is its splendour and opulence. It was declared an historical monument in 1923. The 2000 seat auditorium boasts a magnificent six tonne chandelier and a ceiling painted by Marc Chagall depicting scenes from operas by fourteen composers. There is a towering grand foyer, a thirty metre marble staircase and a museum/library. To attend a performance here is a stirring and unforgettable experience.
Department Stores In The World Capital Of Shopping
The Grands Magasins; these legendary department stores of Paris have acquired an enviable reputation that has helped to cement the city’s position as a world retail capital. The 28 floors and three buildings of Printemps are filled with a breathtaking array of superior items. It also offers seven eating areas. For your convenience there are bilingual staff in attendance. This is also the case in the nearby Galeries Lafayette. This Paris city heritage site is another magnificent emporium offering the finest in fashion and a wealth of other goods, where you can spend many happy hours browsing and buying to your heart’s conte.
The Louvre Museum; The Most Visited In The World
On the Right Bank of the Seine, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, stands one of the world’s largest museums. Housed in the historic monument of the Louvre Palace, the Louvre Museum plays host to millions of visitors each year. Beyond I. M. Pei’s remarkable glass pyramid awaits hundreds of thousands of artifacts reaching from prehistory to the 21st century. It is a remarkable place that, once visited, remains indelibly in the memory. Entire days can be spent browsing the eight departments into which the collections are arranged. We at the Chess Hotel cannot recommend it highly enough.
