The prestigious location of The Chess Hotel
The Chess Hotel opened recently in one of the most highly regarded areas of Paris. Here we are close to many key attractions and landmarks such as the Opera, the beautiful La Madeleine church and the world famous Grands Magasins department stores. We present the historically significant Boulevard Haussmann establishments of Galeries Lafayette and Printemps in our Christmas shopping news below.
Just a short distance across the city to the south can be found the Louvre Museum, one of the finest in the world. This is also the location of a certain restaurant you may not know about, but will most definitely be interested in visiting after a busy day at the Louvre.
Finally, adjacent to the Louvre you can find the Tuileries Garden. While you are in the vicinity you should not miss the opportunity to visit this fine public park, one of the most stately and refined in all of Paris.
Our guide to Christmas Shopping in Paris
Paris assumes her Christmas mantle in November. Illuminations and decorations blossom colourfully throughout the city and shops both large and small offer seasonal delights and an atmosphere of anticipation. With so much choice and delightful sensory appeal it can all be a little overwhelming, so the Chess Hotel would like to give you some recommendations to make the most of your Christmas shopping. You must not miss the colourful, traditional Christmas markets, the world famous department stores and their comprehensive selections, or the historic and distinctly fashionable charms of the rue de Rivoli. We would like to tell you a little about these locations.
Café Marly; A taste of the grandeur of Royalty
Paris is noted for its many fine restaurants. Some boast exceptional views. Others are noted for their exquisite interiors. A few have historical resonance. The Café Marly offers all this and, of course, exceptional cuisine. Located within a wing of the Louvre Museum, it displays all the sumptuousness of its past as a royal residence. Seated here beneath lofty ceilings and amidst plush red and stunning gold decor you gaze out at the magnificent façade of this landmark historical building and the glass pyramid that stands before it while enjoying fine continental cuisine and an ambience that is completely unique.
The Tuileries Garden; One of the world’s first public parks
Separating the Place de la Concorde from the Louvre Museum in the 1st arrondissement of Paris is an elegantly beautiful public park in the style of a formal garden. This is the Tuileries Garden, and it was once in the grounds of a 16th century royal palace. Only two buildings still survive of the former Palais de Tuileries, and these both now function as museums. Wide paths and formal lawns are dotted with perfectly trimmed trees, alongside two large ponds and an amazing collection of statues. It is an ideal place to wander or sit in tranquil contemplation.
